Is the Drought Over?
Here on Crescent Avenue Garden’s Blog, we’ve been trying to keep you up to date on this summer’s drought, since it’s having a big impact on your lawn. You might think that with the rain we’ve been getting almost every week, especially on the north side of Fort Wayne, that maybe the drought is over. Technically, it’s not. It would take a lot of rain, in fact, to make that happen. Meantime, what rain we have been getting has done wonders for our lawns, with many of us out mowing again almost once a week. Hopefully, it stays this way through the fall. I’d rather mow than put in an entirely new lawn. Still, continue to monitor how much rain your yard is really getting. It may rain where you work, but that doesn’t mean it rained on your yard on the other side of town. One useful tool for taking care of your lawn is a rain gauge. With a simple rain gauge, you can tell how much water your yard is really getting. If it’s not enough, keep sprinkling. Your grass may have sent out deep roots, but it’s pretty dry down there right now.
If you do start mowing a lot again, don’t forget that Crescent Avenue Gardens is a full-time power equipment dealer. They still sell lawn mowers all fall while the big box stores have cleared out their Outdoor section to sell Halloween decorations.
Here is link to the Regional Drought Monitor where you can see that we are still in the Severe Drought Range, even though that’s a step or two up from where we were in June and July.
