Longtime employee, turned co-owner, Gayle Shuster said the store is now serving third-, fourth- and fifth-generation relatives of some of the customers who were around when the business first opened its doors in 1959. Not surprisingly, employees are on a first-name basis with many of them. No matter what, Shuster said everyone feels right at home. “We have customers who come in with their dogs, and we have customers who drive their tractors here,” she said.

Crescent Avenue Gardens sells an assortment of outdoor power equipment, including push mowers, riding lawn mowers, zero-turn mowers, leaf blowers, snow blowers, trimmers, tillers, lawn vacuums, chainsaws, sprayers, and more. All products are from top brands like Stihl and Toro.

Additionally, Crescent Avenue Gardens carries a complete line of parts and services a broad range of products from numerous manufacturers.

Shuster said the store’s lawn equipment service department is especially busy at the start of each season. Crescent Avenue Gardens’ six mechanics always juggle a lot of springtime service requests. It’s not uncommon, Shuster said, to have between 100 and 150 mowers in for service at a time. Business continues to boom through fall and winter when leaf and snow blower season kicks into high gear. “Sometimes we’re so busy we can’t see straight,” Shuster said.

Crescent Avenue Gardens relies on the skills and expertise of its staff to manage such a large volume of business. Gary Karst, son of founder Raymond Karst, has earned certificates of achievement in STIHL Gold Master Wrench Service and STIHL Advocate Sales. He is also a Briggs & Stratton certified technician. Shuster has earned a certificate of achievement in STIHL Ambassador Sales.

Shuster said it’s an honor to be a repeat Fort Wayne Newspapaers Readers’ Choice winner. “It shows our customers appreciate us, and we appreciate our customers.”
