Spring Cleaning Your Yard to Promote a Healthy Lawn
With the warmer temps and Spring right around the corner, now’s the time to start getting your lawn ready for the warm season. Want a vibrant and lush lawn? Follow these simple steps.
First, walk the yard and pick up any fallen branches or limbs and debris from the yard. Then use a rake or your leaf blower to clean up any leftover leaves from the Fall.
Next, de-thatch your lawn. For smaller lawns, you can use a rake to get the dead grass and other debris out of the yard. If your lawn is larger, a de-thatcher attachment for a lawn mower will do the trick. De-Thatching promotes healthy root growth, effective draining, and allows fertilizer to properly blend with the soil resulting in a greener, healthier lawn.
Mark off and prepare the bare spots for re-seeding. After you have located the areas that need attention, scratch up the dirt and re-seed. Adding a little bit of topsoil enriched with nutrients will give the new grass a better chance of taking root. Cover the newly seeded area with some straw to keep the moisture in. If you do not use enriched topsoil, you may want to add a small amount of fertilizer to encourage growth. However, do not add too much fertilizer as excessive amounts may burn out the grass.
Aerating the lawn will help water and nutrients get to the roots of the grass quickly and efficiently. To properly aerate a lawn, you can use an attachment on a lawn mower, use a walk-behind model, or simply get a pair of walkers that strap on to your shoes and aerate your lawn as you walk around or mow the yard. No matter how you do it, aerating your lawn will help keep it healthier and more attractive.
Get rid of the weeds. Whether you manually pull or pluck out the weeds or use a spray, ridding you lawn of weeds will not only make your lawn look better but will also help improve the health of the lawn by providing more room and nutrients for the grass.
And finally, decorate your lawn with ornaments, trees, flowers, and other accessories that will bring color and excitement to your slice of Heaven on Earth. When installing these accessories, create a point of focus that draws the attention to the beauty of your creation and away from areas you may not have any control over.
