Starting to Look like a Green Summer Ahead
We have posted news about the big drought of 2012 here from time to time, and it’s about time for an update. Good News! Except for the northern most tier of Hoosier counties, the drought seems to be over. The Indiana State Climate Office at Purdue, says unseasonable warmth and rain this month has eliminated most of the remaining drought.
Still, we weren’t thinking about drought conditions at this time last year, so don’t get too excited. However, NOAA’s long range climate maps shows an expectation of above average rain during the spring, with average rain chances the rest of the year. Average is good, because last summer, we were way below average.
Keep on eye on your trees this spring and summer. Thousand of trees died in the drought last summer, and more will die this summer. You may not think about it,but trees, even with their deep roots, need water too.
Pretty soon, you’ll be able to assess the toll winter and drought has taken on your lawn. It isn’t all that long until your first mowing of the summer season, which usually occurs in Mid-April, only about 12 weeks from today. Your grass should have enough ground water now to keep it happy until then, and if the weather people are right, it will be getting regular water all summer. So plan now to mow a lot more this year than last. If a new mower is in your forecast, stop in now at Crescent Avenue Gardens and check out the new 2013 Toro Lawn mowers, riding mowers, Zero Turn mowers and tractors. Start with our website, here.
The drought is over. It’s all green lawns from here.
